On June 19th 1865 Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. The celebration of June 19th was coined “Juneteenth” and grew with more participation from descendants. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. In cities throughout the U.S. the celebration is marked by festivals, picnics and community forums alike.
In light of the current cultural, social & political climate that currently exists within the African American Community we find it crucial that we too begin dialogues that address and educate communities on the relevance of Juneteenth. Examining the past in order to achieve a more prosperous future is the start of what we hope will become an on-going process.
So I encourage you to take a moment today to Google the word Juneteenth and learn something you might not otherwise be aware of.
